TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Can someone's personality be influenced by blood type? This question has sparked an interesting debate. In Japan, there is a theory that states blood types can reflect a person's nature and character.
The theory known as Ketsueki-gata is similar to how astrology is used to predict personality based on zodiac signs. Although intriguing, this theory often faces criticism from the scientific community due to the lack of supporting evidence. So, how valid is this claim?
Origin of Ketsueki-gata Theory
As quoted from Verywell Mind, in 1930, a Japanese professor named Tokeji Furukawa published a study proposing a relationship between blood type and personality.
According to Furukawa, blood types A, B, AB, and O each have unique characteristics, as follows:
- Blood type A is considered meticulous, creative, and decisive.
- Blood type B is described as enthusiastic, empathetic, but tends to be selfish.
- Blood type AB is believed to be logical yet mysterious.
- Blood type O is often seen as confident and having leadership qualities.
Unfortunately, this study lacks strong scientific basis and relies more on subjective questionnaires. Despite facing criticism, Furukawa's ideas regained popularity in the 1970s through books and mass media in Japan, eventually becoming a common belief that still persists today.
Although not supported by scientific evidence, the Ketsueki-gata theory has a significant influence in Japan. In a social context, people often inquire "what's your blood type?" as a way to predict personality or compatibility with a partner.
However, this belief also leads to discrimination. Individuals with blood type B are often labeled as selfish and difficult to work with, affecting society's perception of them. Conversely, blood type AB is often considered a superior group in certain fields, such as planning and analysis.
In the workplace, some companies in Japan have even used blood type as one of the recruitment criteria, although this practice is now being abandoned due to its discriminatory nature.
Scientific Views on Blood Types
Blood type is medically determined by the presence of certain antigens on red blood cells. The main system known is the ABO system, which divides blood types into A, B, AB, and O based on antigens A and B. The Rh factor positive or negative also influences blood type systems.
In healthcare, blood type plays a crucial role, especially in blood transfusions and certain disease risks, as follows:
- Blood type A has a higher risk of heart disease and stomach cancer.
- Blood type B has a higher risk of blood clotting, such as venous thrombosis and pulmonary embolism.
- Blood type O is more susceptible to stomach ulcers but has a lower risk of certain cancers.
- Blood type AB is linked to pregnancy complications, such as preeclampsia.
However, there is no scientific research proving the relationship between blood type and personality traits. Most studies attempting to prove this theory have failed to provide consistent evidence, categorizing ketsueki-gata as pseudoscience or pseudo-science.
In essence, the theory of personality based on blood types is closer to myth than scientific fact. Although intriguing to discuss, there is no scientific evidence supporting this claim. Like astrology, Ketsueki-gata should be considered as entertainment rather than a serious tool to assess someone's personality.
It is important to remain critical of this theory to avoid falling into unfair stereotypes or discrimination. Understanding individuals more holistically through scientific approaches remains the best way to appreciate individual differences.
