TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Coordinating Minister for Political and Security Affairs Budi Gunawan said the government was monitoring several critical points due to extreme weather conditions throughout Indonesia. He said that this was done to ensure the safety of the Christmas and New Year celebrations.
"There are several critical points that we continue to monitor due to extreme weather conditions, including landslides, floods, rain, and high rainfall," Budi Gunawan said while reviewing the Christmas Mass at the Imanuel Church in Jakarta on Tuesday, December 24, 2024.
Based on his ministry's mapping, several critical areas of high rainfall are South Sulawesi, East Java, and West Java. In addition, the government is also monitoring the activity of various volcanoes such as Mount Semeru in East Java, Mount Lewotobi in East Nusa Tenggara or NTT, and Mount Ibu in North Maluku.
The former head of the National Intelligence Agency revealed that the government had prepared a disaster response team. It consists of personnel from the military or TNI, police, the National Disaster Mitigation Agency or BPBN, and regional government ranks.
"There are 1,854 integrated posts, including service posts, to ensure that all Christmas and New Year activities run smoothly, safely, and peacefully," he said.
Budi Gunawan, along with Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Culture Pratikno, Minister of Religious Affairs Nasaruddin Umar, TNI Commander General Agus Subiyanto, and National Police Chief General Listyo Sigit Prabowo, visited three churches in the Jakarta area ahead of the 2024 Christmas Mass. These include the Cathedral Church, GKI Samanhudi, and Imanuel Church.
The Christmas Mass was held in churches across Indonesia on Tuesday afternoon, December 24, 2024. This year's national Christmas celebration theme is "Let Us Go to Bethlehem Now".
