TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Head of the Regional Office (Kakanwil) of the Ministry of Religious Affairs of South Sulawesi Ali Yafid said that the waiting period for hajj pilgrims in his area had reached 48 years. He reported this to the Minister of Religious Affairs Nasaruddin Umar, but this year there is no additional hajj quota policy for South Sulawesi.
"This year South Sulawesi does not receive an additional hajj quota, even though we hope to receive an additional quota like last year," said Ali in Makassar, Saturday, January 11, 2025.
Ali hopes that the Minister of Religious Affairs can help convey this when meeting with the Saudi Arabian Minister of Hajj. The hope is that there will be an additional hajj quota for South Sulawesi.
Based on data from the Ministry of Religious Affairs, the hajj quota for South Sulawesi in 2025 has not increased compared to last year, which is only 7,272 people. Meanwhile, the waiting list for prospective hajj pilgrims for South Sulawesi as of January 6, 2025, is 248,940 pilgrims.
With this addition, the average waiting period for hajj departure reaches 34 years. "The longest waiting period in Bantaeng Regency is 48 years and the shortest is in Luwu Regency, which is 23 years," said Ali.
Therefore, Ali hopes that his region will still have the opportunity to get an additional quota from the results of the meeting between the Minister of Religion and the Saudi Arabian Minister of Hajj. "We are waiting for the results of the meeting later, hopefully there will be an additional quota for officers and regular and special hajj pilgrims," he said.
This long hajj waiting period was also previously mentioned by the Chair of Commission VIII of the DPR, Marwan Dasopang, after meeting with President Prabowo Subianto at the State Palace on Tuesday, January 7. He said that the Indonesian departure queue could reach 49 years. Currently, according to him, the average waiting list for Indonesian hajj pilgrims is around 25-30 years. However, in some areas the waiting list can be longer.
"But there are, because this waiting period is not the same in each province. In South Sulawesi, there are districts that have a waiting period of more than 49 years. But the average is between 25-30 years. There are 3 districts in South Sulawesi that have reached 48 years. This is quite difficult to unravel," said Marwan.
The National Awakening Party legislator said that one solution to unravel it is to increase the hajj quota. One of the efforts is to revise the Hajj Law so that Indonesia can send hajj pilgrims via friendly countries that do not use up their hajj quota.
Commission VIII hopes that the government can lobby the Saudi Arabian government to get an additional quota for this year's hajj. Although the 2025 hajj working committee has set a quota of 221,000 pilgrims.
