Here's Why Bright Light Disrupts Sleep, Beware of the Risks

1 week ago 28

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Some people have difficulty sleeping in brightly lit rooms. When asked why, they tend to answer that the light dazzles their eyes and disturbs the process of sleeping.

Referring to a review on the Harvard Health Publishing website from Harvard Medical School, bright light exposure at night can affect the body's preparation process for sleep. The pineal gland produces melatonin in response to darkness. This melatonin hormone plays a crucial role in regulating the body's circadian sleep rhythm. Light exposure, in this case, disrupts the production of melatonin, thus affecting the quality and pattern of sleep.

People who rest near a light source are likely to have shorter sleep durations because they wake up more frequently at night. This applies even if the individual uses a night light.

Sleep quality will be further disrupted if there is exposure to brighter lights from outside, such as street lights or vehicles. When exposed to light, the body's condition is not synchronized with the circadian rhythm of sleep, where nighttime becomes bright and daytime becomes dark.

Sleep disturbances can have negative impacts on mental and physical health. For sensitive individuals, lack of sleep can trigger symptoms of depression, high blood pressure, obesity, and even diabetes. Due to these risks, companies that implement early morning shift systems generally provide special health insurance for their employees.

The Function of Eye Masks in Maintaining Sleep Quality

Researchers at Cardiff University, England, conducted a series of experiments to study the effectiveness of eye masks for sleep. They tested the level of wakefulness in humans when using the device, especially its influence on the sleep process.

In the experiment, 90 adults aged 18-35 years slept with eye masks and were exposed to light at night alternately. The results showed that the eye masks did not affect the quality and quantity of sleep for individuals resting under light exposure.
