TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian travelers from various generations continue to demonstrate a high level of enthusiasm for holidays and vacations abroad, but with very different preferences. This is revealed in the latest Airbnb data released on Friday, November 28, 2025.
While their travel styles differ, all generations share a commonality: seeking authentic local experiences and creating meaningful memories, whether on solo adventures, family vacations, or seeking inner peace.
"Travel is deeply personal, and it's fascinating to see how Indonesian guests create trips that reflect who they are and what's important to them," said Amanpreet Bajaj, Airbnb's Country Head for Southeast Asia and India, in a written press release received by Tempo.
The data shows that Japan remains the most popular international destination for Indonesian travelers across generations. Furthermore, Indonesian guests tend to stay longer, averaging four days, compared to travelers from other Asian countries, who typically stay only two to three days.
Differences in vacation preferences between generations
Airbnb accomodation searches by Indonesian Gen Z travelers have surged by more than 25 percent compared to last year. This younger generation is largely inspired by social media and online reviews. Their favorite domestic destinations are Magelang and East Java, while for overseas destinations, they choose Dubai in the United Arab Emirates and Sa Pa in Vietnam.
For millennials, many of whom are now entering the marriage and child-rearing phase, vacations are a way to create family memories. Tokyo, Osaka, Rome, Florence, and Bangkok are the top five most sought-after destinations for this age group, offering a combination of culture, comfort, and family-friendly amenities.
Meanwhile, Gen X travelers prioritize meaningful experiences with a balance of exploration and relaxation. Rome (Italy) and Lourdes (France) are two of the most sought-after international destinations for this generation, rich in history, spirituality, and natural beauty.
