TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The head of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said on Saturday that nuclear power plants (NPPs) and their surrounding areas must never be attacked, following the fourth attack near an Iranian nuclear plant.
On the social media platform X, as quoted by Antara, the IAEA stated that, based on information from Iran, a projectile struck the area around the Bushehr nuclear power plant on Saturday morning local time. According to the IAEA, this is the fourth such incident in recent weeks.
The IAEA said that a staff member at the site was killed by shrapnel and that a building was affected by the shockwave and debris, citing Iranian authorities. The agency said there were no reports of increased radiation levels.
IAEA Director-General Rafael Grossi expressed deep concern over the incident, emphasizing that the nuclear power plant site and its surrounding area "must absolutely not be attacked." He noted that the support buildings at the facility may contain vital safety equipment.
Grossi reiterated the importance of ensuring nuclear security and safety during conflict. He called for the exercise of maximum restraint in all military actions to prevent nuclear accidents.
Since the joint Israeli-U.S. military offensive against Iran began on February 28, the country's nuclear facilities have been attacked several times.
