The Advisor of the Center for Sharia Economic Development Institute for Development of Economics and Finance (CSED Indef) Abdul Hakam Naja stated that the plan to develop Indonesian Hajj Village in Mecca, Saudi Arabia, deserves support.
"The development plan for an Indonesian Village for Hajj and Umrah pilgrims in Mecca by the National Investment Management Agency for Nusantara Potential (Danantara) deserves support," he said during a virtual public discussion on Sharia Economics in Financial Notes in Jakarta, Monday, August 25, 2025.
In total, the number of Hajj pilgrims from Indonesia is 221 thousand people in 2025 and 1.8 million people for Umrah in 2024. Currently, the total managed funds of the Hajj Finance Management Agency (BPKH) in 2025 amounts to Rp188 trillion with an annual expenditure for the circulation of Hajj and Umrah funds of Rp70 trillion.
Abdul believes that the development plan for the Indonesian Hajj Village must be able to synergize with BPKH to ensure that the opportunity for circulation of Hajj and Umrah funds returns to Indonesia, not to Saudi Arabia. "They said we have obtained approval from Prince Muhammad Bin Salman. We will get the location (Pilgrim Village), they said, 1 to 2 kilometers from Masjid al-Haram. Alhamdulillah, hopefully it will be implemented soon, but this is important. If we have a Hajj and Umrah ecosystem, we can replicate it in other places," Abdul Hakam expressed.
Previously, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Danantara Indonesia, Rosan Roeslani, made a working visit to Jeddah and Mecca, in accordance with the directive of the President of the Republic of Indonesia, Prabowo Subianto. Rosan mentioned that in the future, people will receive good and comfortable accommodation facilities in Mecca, which can be developed as an integrated service center for worship needs, health clinics, and mentoring spaces in strategic locations.
During his visit, Rosan surveyed more than 10 land options and 3 major projects in Mecca, which are potential candidates for the development of the Hajj Village, designed to include accommodation facilities, pilgrim service centers, health clinics, and meeting spaces for worship mentoring. This step is expected to improve the comfort, security, and efficiency for millions of Indonesian Hajj and Umrah pilgrims each year.
