TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Minister of Coordination of Political, Legal, and Security Affairs Budi Gunawan has declared a state of narcotics emergency in Indonesia. He explained that this is because the country not only grapples with the scourge of drug consumption but has also been a target market for illegal drug distribution.
“It has even become one of the drug producers in the world,” Budi Gunawan said in a press conference on the achievements of the Narcotics Eradication Desk held at the National Police Headquarters in Jakarta on Thursday, December 5, 2024.
According to government data, the number of drug users in the archipelago reached 3.3 million in 2024. The minister, affectionately known as BG, expressed deep concern over the alarming trend of drug abuse among the younger generation, particularly among teenagers aged 15 to 24.
The former head of the State Intelligence Agency emphasized that the illicit narcotics trade has infiltrated every corner of the nation, extending its reach beyond major urban centers to remote and underserved areas.
He mentioned President Prabowo Subianto's directive to implement comprehensive and decisive measures to dismantle the narcotics networks operating within Indonesia at their very roots. BG reiterated the commitment of all ministries and relevant agencies within the Narcotics Eradication Desk to strengthen inter-agency cooperation and provide mutual support in the ongoing fight against this pervasive threat.
“This synergy includes intensified coordination,” BG stressed.
This coordinated approach includes preventive measures, law enforcement, rehabilitation, education, and anti-drug campaigns. He announced that the government will intensify public awareness campaigns to educate communities, students, and various other segments of society.
These educational initiatives, he went on, will be disseminated through diverse platforms to raise awareness about the grave dangers of narcotics and prevent the initiation of drug use among young people.
