TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian government is mobilizing humanitarian aid to assist Vanuatu following a devastating 7.3 magnitude earthquake that struck the island nation on Tuesday, December 17, 2024.
“The President has instructed us to immediately prepare and dispatch aid to Vanuatu since the country is our important partner, and this is a humanitarian issue that must be our concern,” said Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Culture, Pratikno, during a press conference at his office in Central Jakarta on Monday, December 23, 2024.
Pratikno said an advance team from the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) will be deployed to Vanuatu on Tuesday, December 24, 2024. The main contingent of humanitarian aid, consisting of essential supplies, will be dispatched on Friday, December 27, 2024. Pratikno emphasized that these efforts will not detract from domestic disaster management operations within Indonesia.
Health Minister Budi Gunadi Sadikin also announced that an Emergency Medical Team, comprising orthopedic surgeons and internal medicine specialists, is ready to be deployed to Vanuatu as soon as clearance is received. The Ministry of Health will also provide essential medical supplies to support the relief efforts.
Lt. Gen. TNI Suharyanto, Head of BNPB, confirmed that the aid package will include 19 types of essential supplies and will be transported via three aircraft: one passenger plane carrying the Emergency Medical Team and two cargo planes carrying the relief supplies.
“God willing, on Dec. 27, the President will officially dispatch the aid, and the supplies will arrive in Vanuatu to assist the affected communities,” Suharyanto said.
The Vanuatu government has declared a seven-day state of emergency following the earthquake, which has resulted in significant damage to infrastructure, including hospitals, residential and public buildings, roads, water reservoirs, and gas pipes. At least 14 people have been confirmed dead, and over 200 people have been injured.
