TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian National Team was held to a 3-3 draw by Laos in their Group B match of the 2024 AFF Cup. The match played at the Manahan Stadium in Solo on Thursday, December 12, 2024, proved to be a thrilling encounter.
Facing Laos, the Garuda squad employed a 3-5-2 formation. Daffa Fasya Sumawijaya replaced Cahya Supriyadi between the posts, while the backline comprised Muhammad Ferrari, Kadek Arel Priyatna, and Kakang Rudianto.
Dony Tri Pamungkas and Pratama Arhan occupied the left and right wing-back positions, respectively. Muhammad Rayhan and Arkhan Fikri formed the midfield duo, supporting the attacking partnership of Rafael Struick and Hokky Caraka, with Marselino Ferdinan operating as a supporting midfielder.
First Half
Laos opened the scoring in the ninth minute. A midfield turnover involving Arkhan Fikri allowed Bounphachan Bounkong to deliver a through pass to Phousomboun Panyavong, who finished clinically to make it 1-0.
Indonesia quickly responded, equalizing in the 11th minute. A goalmouth scramble ensued, and Kadek Arel capitalized, firing home a shot to level the score at 1-1.
However, Laos regained the lead just two minutes later. A swift counter-attack saw Bounkong outmaneuver Kadek Arel and provide a pinpoint pass to Phathana Phommathep, who finished decisively to make it 2-1.
Indonesia equalized again in the 17th minute. Pratama Arhan's incisive throw-in found the head of Ferrari, who directed the ball into the net to level the score at 2-2.
The remainder of the first half saw Indonesia dominate possession, enjoying 70% of the ball compared to Laos' 30%. The Garuda squad created 15 scoring chances, with five on target, while Laos managed only two shots on goal. Despite these promising statistics, the score remained 2-2 at halftime.
Second Half
Indonesian national team coach Shin Tae-yong introduced three substitutions at the start of the second half, bringing on Viktor Dethan, Zanadin Fariz, and Asnawi Mangkualam to replace Hokky Caraka, Kakang Rudianto, and Hannan Rayhan.
Indonesia continued to dominate possession in the first ten minutes of the second half, enjoying 70% of the ball. They created several promising opportunities from throw-ins and corner kicks but were unable to capitalize.
In the 68th minute, Indonesia was reduced to ten men when Marselino Ferdinan was shown a red card for a strong challenge on Phathana Phommathep.
Despite being a man down, Indonesia continued to press forward. In the 71st minute, Rafael Struick embarked on a solo run, dribbling through the Laos defense before unleashing a shot that was saved by the goalkeeper.
However, Indonesia regained the lead in the 72nd minute. Dony Tri's corner kick found the head of Ferrari, who powered home the header to make it 3-2.
The lead was short-lived, as Laos equalized once again in the 77th minute through Peter Phanthawong.
