TEMPO.COJakarta - The government is planning to implement a unified pricing policy for rice across Indonesia this year. Coordinating Minister for Food Affairs Zulkifli Hasan noted that the government would need to cover transportation costs to facilitate this, though the specific budgetary allocation for these logistics has yet to be finalized.

"We will strive in 2026 to ensure a single price for rice everywhere, so that residents in areas such as eastern Indonesia, for example, do not have to pay more," the Minister stated during a coordination meeting at Graha Mandiri, Jakarta, on Monday, January 12, 2026.

During the meeting, Zulkifli explained that the State Logistics Agency (Bulog) is being given the opportunity to generate a profit from these operations. Bulog currently does not earn profit from rice sales.

Despite the move toward a single price point, Zulkifli clarified that rice will still be categorized; the proposed rates include medium-grade rice at Rp13,500 per kilogram and premium-grade at Rp14,900 per kilogram. Additionally, rice under the Food Supply and Price Stabilization (SPHP) program, which benefits from government subsidies, will be sold within the range of Rp11,000 to Rp12,000 per kilogram.

Regarding the execution of this policy, Zulkifli stated that Bulog’s profit margin has been set at 7 percent. "That margin is primarily intended to ensure that the single-price policy for rice remains sustainable and consistent throughout Indonesia," he explained.

To support this price stabilization effort, the government is targeting the procurement and absorption of 4 million tons of rice annually. For the current year, Bulog has set its absorption target to match that 4-million-ton figure to ensure adequate national stock.

According to the latest Bulog data as of January 8, 2026, the national rice reserve currently stands at 3,351,900 tons. The majority of this stock is being prioritized for domestic consumption leading up to the Eid al-Fitr holiday, followed by the distribution of 1.5 million tons of SPHP rice and an allocation of 1 million tons for export.
