TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian government plans to import 1 million tons of rice from India, following Prabowo’s meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the sidelines of the G20 Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on Monday, November 18, 2024.
Trade Minister Budi Santoso explained that the planned rice import is part of the 3.6 million tons import quota this year. The Ministry of Trade has explored rice import plans with several countries given the 1.6 million tons increased import quota from the previous 2 million tons.
"In principle, we don’t mind any countries to be our supplier, as long as the price is competitive,” Budi Santoso told reporters at the Parliament Complex, Jakarta, on Wednesday, November 20, 2024.
Budi Santoso said the government has requested around 1 million tons from India. The business-to-business process has been completed, he said, so his side currently expedites the government-to-government process to speed up the rice import realization.
"We’re aiming the import for this year, that’s why we pursue the G2G process. Outside India, we’ll continue to work with Bulog to decide where we will source the rice from,” he said.
Prabowo held a bilateral meeting with Modi in Brazil, discussing various cooperation opportunities in healthcare, education, and trade to strengthen bilateral relations between Indonesia and India.
"Indonesia and India have a long and good relationship. We highly value this relationship and are committed to enhancing it in various fields," said Prabowo, quoted from the Presidential Secretariat's written statement.
Prabowo reveals Indonesia's urgent need for medical professionals, as Indonesia faces a shortage of 160,000 doctors. The former TNI General hoped India could send professors and specialists to teach at Indonesian universities.
