TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Kemlu) through the Indonesian Embassy in Phnom Penh confirmed that it is currently investigating information related to the news of an Indonesian citizen from Tanjung Pinang, Riau Islands, who claims to have been held captive and sold in Cambodia.

According to the Director of Protection of Indonesian Citizens and Legal Entities at the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Judha Nugraha, through a written statement, Saturday, December 28, 2024, as reported by Antara, the Indonesian Embassy in Phnom Penh has succeeded in establishing communication with the Indonesian citizen named Agung Hariadi, and is currently conducting further investigations.

"If the necessary information has been obtained, the Indonesian Embassy in Phnom Penh will then coordinate with Cambodian law enforcement authorities for further handling," said Judha.

It is known that a recording has been circulating on social media showing Agung (25) asking for help so that he can return to Indonesia. He admitted to being sold, held captive, and forced to work in Poipet, Cambodia, even though he was previously promised to work in Malaysia.

Meanwhile, Judha said that cases of Indonesian citizens involved in online fraud in a number of places around the world, including Cambodia, have increased.

As of November 2024, the Indonesian Embassy in Phnom Penh has handled more than 2,946 cases of Indonesian citizen protection, of which 2,259 cases were related to online fraud.

"The number of Indonesian citizens in Cambodia is predicted to have reached 100 thousand people by November 2024," Judha added.

The Indonesian Embassy in Phnom Penh also receives an average of 15-30 complaints of Indonesian citizen protection cases every day that resemble the Agung Hariadi case, said the Director of PWNI at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Thus, the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs urges the public to always be vigilant against job vacancies abroad that offer overly tempting benefits, such as high salaries and no work experience required, which are usually circulated on social media and the internet.

The Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs also urges Indonesian citizens who face similar problems in Cambodia to report their problems through the Indonesian Embassy in Phnom Penh's telephone line at +855-12-813-282 or the Peduli WNI portal via the peduliwni.kemlu.go.id website.
