Indonesia's Aceh Singkil Isolated by Floods as Thousands Face Starvation Risk

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Widespread flooding has isolated large sections of Aceh Singkil in Indonesia’s Aceh Province, triggering urgent concerns about dwindling food stocks for thousands of displaced residents. Authorities caution that refugees could face starvation if aid does not arrive soon.

“Our logistics will only last until tomorrow. If help does not arrive, the refugees will be at serious risk of going hungry,” said Husni, Head of the Aceh Singkil Disaster Management Agency (BPBD), in a statement on Monday, December 1, 2025.

Husni explained that over the past several days, evacuees have survived solely on limited donations from unaffected neighbors.

Access from outside the district has been blocked after floods severed multiple roads and bridges, leaving only a handful of areas reachable through difficult alternative routes and specific vehicles.

Communication has also collapsed across much of Aceh Singkil. “We can barely communicate. Electricity has been out for a week, and phone networks are down. We urgently ask the government to accelerate aid delivery,” Husni said.

Flooding has affected nine of the district’s eleven sub-districts. The remaining three sub-districts, namely Pulau Banyak, Pulau Banyak Barat, and Kuala Baru, were spared because they are located on outlying islands not connected by road. However, residents there are now facing their own supply crisis.

“Fuel deliveries cannot reach the mainland because of road closures, so the ships that normally transport supplies to the islands have been forced to halt operations,” Husni added.

Authorities continue to call for immediate logistical support to prevent the situation from deteriorating further.
