TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Head of the Presidential Staff Office, Muhammad Qodari, stated that the government has secured an additional 127.3 hectares of territory on Sebatik Island, North Kalimantan. Qodari explained that the confirmation of the land border between Indonesia and Malaysia on Sebatik Island has been successfully completed.
He claimed that the completion of the border confirmation on the island is a concrete manifestation of successful peaceful diplomacy. The agreement on the new border line is said to strengthen Indonesia's territorial sovereignty.
"The 127.3 hectares of land, which was previously part of Malaysia under the old border, now officially belongs to Indonesia," said Qodari at the Presidential Palace complex in Jakarta on Wednesday, April 15, 2026.
He explained that the adjustment of the border line also resulted in a portion of Indonesian territory becoming part of Malaysia. However, the area is much smaller compared to the Malaysian territory that shifted to Indonesia. "Only 4.9 hectares of land that was part of Indonesia under the old border has now become part of Malaysia," Qodari added.
Furthermore, Qodari stated that the Ministry of Home Affairs has formed a special team to calculate compensation for residents affected by the border change. "The team is calculating compensation for the land and property affected by the confirmation of the border on Sebatik Island," he said.
On the other hand, the government has allocated a budget of Rp86 billion in 2026 to support the management of border areas. This funding is earmarked for the operation of 15 Integrated Border Posts (PLBN) under the National Border Management Agency (BNPP).
From December 2016 to October 2024, Indonesia has already constructed and inaugurated 15 PLBN out of the planned 18 across various regions. Among the operational PLBN are Entikong in West Kalimantan, Motaain in East Nusa Tenggara, Skouw in Papua, Serasan in the Riau Islands, and now Sebatik, whose land border confirmation has just been finalized.
