TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) clarified a viral video of a disaster-affected resident in Aceh Tamiang claiming to have been asked to return to a refugee tent after receiving the key to a temporary housing unit. The information is untrue, according to Abdul Muhari, the head of the Disaster Data, Information, and Communication Center at BNPB.

"That definitely did not happen," he said in a statement on Tuesday, February 24, 2026, but admitted that he did not yet see the video.

But Abdul said the temporary housing units were built to shelter displaced residents after the floods and landslides struck the region last year. "So no one stays in the tents anymore," he said.

An elderly resident, as uploaded by @mufaiisme on Instagram, previously claimed to have been evicted from the temporary home. The video has been viewed 53 thousand times and has received 144 comments.

The brief video shows an elderly woman standing alone in front of an orange refugee tent. The woman was then asked by the recorder if she was asked to return to the tent after receiving the key to occupy the temporary housing unit. The woman just nodded in agreement, and the clip did not specify who evicted the disaster-affected resident.

The Minister of Home Affairs, Tito Karnavian, said he was not aware of the news. "Social media sometimes differs from the facts. I will check," said Tito on Sunday, February 22, 2026.

Based on data from the Task Force for Accelerating Rehabilitation and Reconstruction Post-Disasters in Sumatra in early February, the total construction of temporary housing units in the three provinces reached 17,499 units, with 4,263 units of them completed, equivalent to 24 percent of the total plan.

In detail, 3,248 units out of the total 15,934 temporary home constructions have been completed in Aceh. Meanwhile, in North Sumatra, 539 units were completed out of the total 947 planned, or 57 percent. West Sumatra has 476 temporary homes out of the planned 618 units, equal to 77 percent complete.
