TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Head of the International Relations Department at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), Lina Alexandra, spoke up about Foreign Minister Sugiono's stance on Israel's military aggression against Palestine, which was delivered in the 2025 Foreign Minister's Annual Press Statement (PPTM) last Friday.
According to Lina, the minister did not present any new ideas in support of Palestine, and delivered instead mere obligatory remarks often made by foreign ministers.
“If the question is whether the foreign minister delivered new proposals or ideas, then unfortunately, the answer is no,” Lina said in a press conference broadcast via the CSIS YouTube channel on Monday, January 13, 2024.
Based on Sugiono's speech, Lina highlighted Indonesia's position in supporting a two-state solution that recognizes the existence of Palestine and Israel. Lina also touched on Sugiono's statement that Israel's military aggression constitutes a violation of international law.
“Both are known facts. But he did not propose any new initiatives,” Lina added.
Furthermore, Lina said that Indonesia's track record in defending Palestine is well known on the global stage. Support for Palestine, Lina explained, has been emphasized by Indonesia since its independence. Indonesia also participated in the OIC's efforts to support Palestine.
According to Lina, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs should be able to leverage this track record to boost support for Palestine, especially since Indonesia has many accomplished diplomats.
Lina laments that Indonesia has yet to leverage its position optimally, moreover in its response to the recently intensified Israeli aggression. Lina urged the ministry and its diplomats to increase concrete steps to resolve the war between Israel and Palestine.
Previously, Minister of Foreign Affairs Sugiono reaffirmed Indonesia’s continued commitment to support Palestine’s independence, a country that has been falling victim to Israeli aggression.
“To create world peace, Indonesia's free and active diplomacy will never abandon the Palestinian cause,” Sugiono said when delivering a speech at the 2025 Annual Press Statement of Foreign Ministers at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs office, Central Jakarta, on Friday, January 10, 2025.
The Israeli military aggression in Gaza, Palestine, has been ongoing for over 460 days, killing tens of thousands of Palestinians and displacing most of the enclave’s population. Sugiono said the number of casualties in Gaza is not a mere statistical figure.
Sugiono addressed that Indonesia supports the Palestinian struggle by delivering humanitarian aid and supporting the works of the UN Palestine refugees agency (UNRWA).
The minister then urged Israel to abide by the rules of international law. Additionally, Sugiono said Indonesia continues to call for a two-state solution to end the conflict between Israel and Palestine and request an immediate ceasefire to achieve peace.
Indonesia is also ready to send more peacekeeping troops if the UN Security Council wishes, said Sugiono.
