TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Prabowo Subianto tasked Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono with attending the BRICS Summit in Kazan, Russia, from October 23-24, 2024. As reported by Antara, Sugiono will deliver a message of peace and a call for solidarity among developing countries at the summit.
"In BRICS Plus, Indonesia will convey the pivotal message of peace and the importance of developing countries and the Global South to unite, enhance solidarity, and play their important role in creating a more inclusive, just, and equal world order," said the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs in a written statement in Jakarta, Tuesday, October 22.
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Sugiono's presence at the summit affirms Indonesia's commitment to play an active role on the international stage and strengthen relations with all countries, including BRICS member countries. Moreover, BRICS members, initially consisting of Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, have expanded with the addition of new countries such as the United Arab Emirates, Iran, Egypt, and Ethiopia.
Indonesia's attendance at the BRICS Summit this week fulfills Russia’s invitation as this year’s BRICS presidency holder. Indonesia has also been invited several times to participate in the BRICS Summit over the past few years.
In addition to BRICS member countries, Russia has also invited non-BRICS member countries and several international organizations, such as the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) and the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO).
Foreign Minister Sugiono is also scheduled to hold bilateral meetings with a number of friendly countries to discuss bilateral, regional, and global issues.
The 16th BRICS Summit in Kazan, Russia, will be attended by representatives from 32 countries, 24 of which are represented by heads of state, while the other eight send high-ranking officials. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres also reportedly has accepted Russia’s invitation to participate in the summit.
