Indonesia's Health Ministry Urges Mask Use as Influenza-Like Illnesses Spread Nationwide

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia's Deputy Health Minister Benjamin Paulus has urged the public to wear masks to curb the spread of Influenza-Like Illnesses (ILI), as cases of flu-like infections have risen in several regions in recent weeks.

Benjamin, who is also known as Benny, said the increase in influenza cases is linked to the transition from the dry to the rainy season.

“During this seasonal shift, from September to October, flu cases usually rise,” he said at the Health Ministry office in Jakarta on Friday, October 17, 2025.

The pulmonary specialist noted that influenza cases are expected to decline by December but could surge again between March and April next year.

Benny emphasized the importance of preventive measures such as wearing masks, particularly during seasonal transitions. “Wearing a mask is our best protection,” he said, adding that individuals with weaker immune systems are more vulnerable to infection.

“The flu is closely related to immunity. So, it’s better for us to wear masks during flu season,” he added. He also urged people with flu symptoms to limit contact with others to prevent further transmission.

Meanwhile, Aji Muhawarman, Head of the Health Ministry’s Communication and Public Information Bureau, said the current increase follows a regional trend seen in neighboring Southeast Asian countries.

“Malaysia, Singapore, and Thailand have also reported rising cases, mostly dominated by influenza type A viruses,” Aji said via WhatsApp on Thursday, October 16, 2025.

He explained that both influenza A and B share similar symptoms, but type A mutates faster and is more contagious.

According to the ministry, Indonesia, as a tropical country, experiences influenza virus circulation year-round. However, activity typically intensifies during the rainy season or when air quality deteriorates in major cities.

“Lower temperatures and high humidity during the rainy season allow the virus to survive longer, replicate more easily, and spread more widely,” Aji said.
