TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Kolintang is a traditional musical instrument typical of Minahasa, North Sulawesi. Currently, Kolintang has been officially recognized as part of the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO. This acknowledgment was conveyed during the 19th session of the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage in Paraguay, on Thursday, December 5, 2024 at 12:20 local time or 22:00 WIB.

In response to this recognition, Minister of Culture Fadli Zon in his virtual speech expressed appreciation to all parties who have contributed.

"Kolintang is not just a musical instrument, but a symbol of harmony, unity, and creativity of the Indonesian people. This recognition is evidence of our joint commitment to preserving the cultural heritage of the nation," said Fadli, on December 5, 2024, as quoted by Antara.

Fadli also stated that this acknowledgement is a reflection of the cross-cultural values of Kolintang, which bear similarities to balafon, a traditional musical instrument from Mali, Burkina Faso, and Cte d'Ivoire in West Africa. Indonesia's collaboration with these three countries is evidence that traditional music can bridge geographical and cultural differences.

"Despite coming from different traditions, Kolintang and Balafon show that music is a universal language that can unite us in rhythm and creativity amidst differences," he said.

Fadli also conveyed respect and pride to the entire Kolintang community in Indonesia, from musicians, craftsmen, to cultural practitioners who have worked hard to maintain the sustainability of this musical instrument. This contribution also continues to inspire future generations.

This recognition by UNESCO also carries a great responsibility to always preserve and promote Kolintang on a national and international scale. This cultural heritage should also serve as a bridge for intercultural dialogue and connect generations.

"We hope that this recognition will increase global awareness of the importance of intangible cultural heritage, as well as strengthen cross-border cooperation in efforts to preserve Kolintang and Balafon," he said.

The global recognition of Kolintang encompasses five important domains of Intangible Cultural Heritage, namely oral traditions, performing arts, social practices and ritual expressions, ecological knowledge, and traditional craftsmanship. Kolintang is also expected to be a catalyst for change that transcends geographical, cultural, and linguistic boundaries, and supports the achievement of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

"The Ministry of Culture is ready to support and commit to collaborating with all layers of society in advancing, developing, and nurturing culture, especially in the context of Intangible Cultural Heritage, and promoting an inclusive cultural ecosystem," said Fadli.

Previously, Fadli stated that the Indonesian government had submitted three works to be included in the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage list, namely Reog Ponorogo, Kebaya, and Kolintang.

"Hopefully, in the near future, within 1-2 weeks, the results will be out," said Fadli, on November 23, 2024.

If these three cultural works pass verification, it will increase the number of Indonesia's Intangible Cultural Heritage items recognized by the world through UNESCO from 13 to 16. However, this addition is still a small portion of Indonesia's cultural richness recorded by the Ministry of Culture. Currently, the Intangible Cultural Heritage established at the national level totals 2,213 works, including Kolintang.
