TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed today, January 21, that they did not receive any information from anyone regarding plans to relocate two million Gazans to Indonesia as part of post-conflict reconstruction efforts.
In a written statement, the ministry emphasized that Indonesia firmly opposes any attempt to relocate Gazans. Such measures, the ministry argued, would only serve to perpetuate Israel's illegal occupation of Palestinian territory and align with a broader strategy aimed at expelling Palestinians from Gaza.
“The ceasefire in Gaza must be a momentum for initiating dialogue and negotiations to achieve a two-state solution, in accordance with international law and established international parameters,” the ministry declared.
Previously, NBC reported that U.S. President Donald Trump's envoy to the Middle East, Steve Witkoff, suggested Indonesia as a potential relocation destination for Gazans.
“The question of how to rebuild Gaza remains, as well as where some 2 million Palestinians can be relocated in the meantime. Indonesia, for instance, is among the locations under discussion for where some of them could go,” a transition official stated, echoing Witkoff's comments, as cited by NBC.
The NBC report also noted that Witkoff was planning a working visit to Gaza to oversee the implementation of the ceasefire. While prioritizing the enforcement of the initial phase of the ceasefire agreement and outlining the next steps, Trump and his team are also grappling with the critical need for a long-term solution to end the Gaza conflict.
One of the issues lies in determining the fate and future of the two million Palestinians residing in Gaza, a critical consideration as reconstruction efforts in Gaza proceed. However, Trump's transition team acknowledged that the idea of relocating Gazans is highly controversial, facing opposition from both Palestinians and the wider Arab community. Many believe that such a move would provide Israel with a pretext to forcibly expel Gazans from their homeland.
