TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Prabowo Subianto expressed his concern regarding the earthquakes in Myanmar and Thailand. He conveyed the message through his official X account.
"I extend my deepest condolences," said Prabowo in a post shared on Friday night, March 29, 2025.
Prabowo affirmed that Indonesia's thoughts and prayers are with the people of both nations during this difficult time. "Indonesia is prepared to provide all necessary support for the recovery efforts in the affected areas," said the former military general.
Separately, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs also expressed condolences for the earthquakes in Myanmar and Thailand. Through the @Kemlu_RI account on X, the government indicated its intention to offer assistance to the two countries, particularly in the most severely impacted regions.
In the same message, the Ministry advised Indonesian citizens affected by the quake to contact the Indonesian Embassy hotline in Yangon (+9595037055) or in Bangkok (+65929031103).
The 7.7 magnitude earthquake struck Myanmar at 14:21 local time (15:21 WIB or Jakarta time), with tremors felt in Bangladesh, India, Laos, China, Thailand, and northern Malaysia.
The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MET Malaysia) reported that the earthquake's epicenter was 55 kilometers southwest of Mandalay, Myanmar, at a depth of 57 kilometers. According to MET Malaysia, tremors were felt in several states in Peninsular Malaysia.
The death toll from the large-scale earthquake in Myanmar is estimated to exceed 10,000 people, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), as reported by 9News.
According to Reuters, the most extensive damage occurred in Myanmar's second-largest city, Mandalay, which is located near the earthquake's epicenter. A rescue officer from Amarapura, an ancient city now within the Mandalay municipality, reported that the bodies of 30 people had been recovered from a collapsed multistory apartment building.
"I have never experienced anything like this before - our town looks like a collapsed city," as quoted by Reuters. He estimated that approximately one-fifth of the buildings had collapsed.
