TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto has asserted that the Quick Response Code Indonesian Standard (QRIS) payment system has achieved global prominence due to its rapidly increasing user base. He emphasized the government's commitment to continuously pushing for the expansion of QRIS usage to various countries.

"QRIS now has 56 million users. Several countries have adopted QRIS, and this has raised concerns for many parties," said Airlangga during the CEO Insight event at Plataran Senayan, Jakarta, on Tuesday, November 4, 2025.

Airlangga explained that the rapid development of QRIS demonstrates Indonesia's success in promoting digital financial inclusion. Currently, the QRIS payment method is already usable in several countries, including Malaysia, Thailand, Japan, China, and South Korea.

The Minister continued that the government is actively exploring similar partnerships with the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to enable cross-border transactions using QRIS. He highlighted that QRIS has adopted international standards, making it compatible and easily integrable with other countries' payment systems.

The government is committed to expanding the QRIS network to more countries to make cross-border transactions more efficient and cost-effective. Furthermore, Airlangga noted that ASEAN countries are currently developing a regional payment system platform.

"Indonesia, having a larger platform, should strengthen itself further," he stated.

Airlangga expressed optimism that the integration of payment systems in ASEAN will strengthen Indonesia's position in the regional digital economy. With the expansion of QRIS and the implementation of Local Currency Settlement (LCS), he believes that the national digital economic growth could reach 15.5 to 19 percent by 2045.

He added that the digital economy potential in the ASEAN region is estimated to reach US$2 trillion by 2030, with Indonesia expected to be a major player with a digital economic value reaching US$600 billion.

QRIS Transaction Growth and International Expansion

Data from Bank Indonesia (BI) Governor Perry Warjiyo confirms the system's success. He reported that the total value of cross-border QRIS transactions across Malaysia, Singapore, and Thailand had reached Rp1.66 trillion as of June 2025.

He provided a breakdown: the cross-border QRIS collaboration with Thailand recorded 994,890 transactions valued at Rp437.54 billion since its launch in August 2022.

In contrast, QRIS transactions between Indonesia and Malaysia achieved 4.31 million transactions, with a cumulative total of Rp1.15 trillion, since its formal introduction in May 2023. Meanwhile, the collaboration with Singapore, inaugurated on November 17, 2023, registered 238,216 transactions, valued at Rp77.06 billion.

Perry emphasized that Bank Indonesia is committed to continually synergizing with the payment system industry and the public to expand QRIS usage. This effort involves the continuous development of innovative features and the expansion of collaborations, both domestically and internationally.
