TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Statistics Indonesia (BPS) will conduct a special census for those living in the Nusantara Capital City (IKN) area. BPS head Amalia Adininggar Widyasanti said the census is requested by the IKN Authority to update the previous population data.
"We were asked by the IKN Authority to conduct a special census for the delineation area of IKN, because last July we conducted an inter-census population survey to update the 2020 census data," said Amalia in a meeting with the House of Representatives on Wednesday, August 27, 2025.
Since IKN is a new area, Amalia said BPS could not conduct a survey without a database, hence the special census. The authority has earmarked a special budget for the census in the new capital city in East Kalimantan. With this census, IKN will have population data for its new delineation area.
This marks the first time BPS conducts a special census in IKN, which consists of parts of three regencies/cities. Amalia explained that the population data for IKN cannot be grouped based on the regular areas, thus requiring a special census.
On the other hand, the IKN Authority continues to finalize the preparations for the establishment of special local governance in the new capital. This includes the delineation of boundaries with surrounding areas, including Balikpapan City.
Quoting the official statement of the IKN Authority on Tuesday, August 26, the government held a coordination meeting at the Tani Bakti Village General Meeting Hall, West Samboja District, Kutai Kartanegara Regency. The meeting was attended by the local government officials and followed by a field survey to the IKN-Balikpapan border points.
The Director of Governance and Development Licensing Control at IKN Authority, Kuswanto, emphasized the importance of land demarcation in the area. After an agreement is reached, the results will be signed mutually by the Head of IKN Authority, the Mayor of Balikpapan, the Regent of Kutai Kartanegara, and the Regent of North Penajam Paser, then submitted to the Ministry of Home Affairs for official designation.
Kuswanto added that determining the boundary was necessary to avoid potential disputes and to provide legal certainty for the surrounding communities. "With this demarcation, IKN management will be clearer to avoid overlaps and serving as a strong basis for future development," he said.
