TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Brigadier General Wahyu Yudhanana, head of the Indonesian Army Information Department (TNI AD), said the TNI has deployed 58,120 soldiers to secure the 2024 Christmas and 2025 New Year celebrations, spread in several strategic locations.
"The focus of security is on strategic locations such as churches, terminals, train stations, airports, ports, and crowded centers," Wahyu said on Tuesday, December 24, 2024.
He said that the Indonesian Army is also working in synergy with the Indonesian National Police and other agencies to maintain public safety and order during Christmas and New Year's celebrations. Wahyu assured that security officials have taken pre-emptive measures to address potential security disturbances during the Christmas and New Year holidays.
"We and our personnel believe that this Christmas and New Year will be peaceful, safe, orderly, and full of solemnity," Wahyu said.
He appealed to the public to be cautious while traveling and to obey traffic regulations. Wahyu also reminded the public to maintain tolerance, not to spread hoaxes, fake news, or provocations, and to avoid dangerous Christmas and New Year celebrations.
"Please celebrate, we will protect you," he said.
Wahyu also reminded the public to be aware of weather changes and possible natural disasters when celebrating Christmas and New Year.
The government has mapped out locations prone to disasters due to extreme weather, such as floods and landslides. Some of these points are located in different places, including South Sulawesi, East Java, and West Java. Several areas in these three provinces are currently affected by flooding and landslides.
The government is also monitoring the activity of various volcanoes in the country, such as Mount Semeru in East Java, Mount Lewotobi in East Nusa Tenggara, and Mount Ibu in North Maluku. The volcanoes erupted several days ago.
