TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian Minister of Religious Affairs, Nasaruddin Umar, announced that the Indonesian government has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Saudi Arabian government. Concurrently, Indonesia has submitted a request for an increase in the quota, specifically for hajj companions.

“We are requesting an additional quota, particularly to support our hajj pilgrims and their accompanying personnel,” he said during a meeting in the Cempaka Putih area of Central Jakarta on Thursday, January 16, 2025.

Nasaruddin emphasized that despite the request for an increased quota, the Ministry of Religious Affairs will assess and plan to prevent unforeseen issues such as inadequate facilities and accommodation in the Holy Land.

Previously, the Saudi Arabian government implemented a 50% reduction in the quota for hajj companions. Director General of Hajj and Umrah of the Indonesian Ministry of Religious Affairs, Hilman Latief, explained that the Saudi Government aimed to improve the assistance ratio and enhance the effectiveness of services while mitigating congestion at hajj sites.

A total of 221,000 Indonesian hajj pilgrims are scheduled to depart for the 2025 hajj pilgrimage. With the 50% reduction in hajj officers, only 2,100 personnel will accompany the pilgrims. According to Hilman's calculations, this translates to an assistance ratio of one officer for every 100 pilgrims. In contrast, the normal quota of 4,200 officers allows for one officer to serve 50 pilgrims.
