TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian Immigration and Correctional Affairs Minister Agus Andrianto announced plans to establish a designated location for Rohingya refugees. The government aims to streamline the management of refugees and minimize disruptions to local communities.
“Refugees arriving here often face challenges, including illness and even death. This eventually creates a humanitarian issue,” Agus said at the Parliament complex in Jakarta, on Tuesday, November 5, 2024.
According to him, Rohingya refugees are currently dispersed across various regions in Aceh Province. The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) reports that Indonesia has hosted Rohingya refugees since 2009, with the total number reaching 2,323 by August 2024. These refugees are scattered across provinces such as Aceh, North Sumatra, Riau, and South Sulawesi.
To address this situation, the Indonesian government intends to consolidate Rohingya refugees in a single location. This centralized approach will facilitate monitoring and management by immigration authorities.
Agus noted that Presidential Regulation No. 125 of 2016 provides the legal framework for handling foreign refugees, but certain provisions may require amendments to empower the Ministry of Immigration to coordinate with relevant ministries more effectively.
The former Deputy Chief of Police has not been able to confirm the specific location for the Rohingya refugees. Agus said the central government will first coordinate with the local government.
Agus also acknowledged the challenges associated with monitoring dispersed refugee populations. “Some refugees have escaped, and others have become involved in human trafficking activities,” he said.
