TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian National Team is currently undergoing intensive training in Bali to prepare for the AFF Cup 2024, now known as the ASEAN Mitsubishi Electric Cup 2024. The Garuda squad's journey begins with an away match against Myanmar on Monday, December 9.
Ahead of the tournament, coach Shin Tae-yong has appealed to Indonesian fans to support the team which predominantly comprises U-22 players.
“We are preparing for the AFF Cup with our U-22 players in Bali. We kindly request your support to help our young talents excel in this competition,” the South Korean coach, affectionately known as STY, shared on his personal Instagram account, as reported by Antara on Tuesday, December 3, 2024.
The Garuda squad has been training intensively in Bali since November 28 and will continue their preparations until December 4. To fine-tune the team, Indonesia will face Bali United in a friendly match on Tuesday, December 3.
Previously, Shin Tae-yong emphasized that his primary goal in the AFF Cup is to achieve the best possible result while simultaneously preparing the U-22 team for the 2025 SEA Games in Thailand.
For the AFF Cup 2024, Shin Tae-yong has called up a squad of 33 players, predominantly U-22 players, with only eight senior national team regulars. These eight players are Justin Hubner, Asnawi Mangkualam, Muhammad Ferarri, Pratama Arhan, Ivar Jenner, Marselino Ferdinan, Rafael Struick, and Hokky Caraka.
“The AFF Cup is a significant tournament and an integral part of our preparations for the SEA Games. These young players possess great potential that can be nurtured to elevate Indonesian football in the future,” Shin Tae-yong said.
Indonesia is placed in Group B of the AFF Cup 2024 alongside Laos, Myanmar, Philippines, and Vietnam. The Garuda squad will kick off their campaign with an away match against Myanmar on December 9, followed by a home match against Laos three days later.
To date, Indonesia has yet to clinch the AFF Cup title. The Garuda squad has reached the final six times, falling short on each occasion: 2000, 2002, 2004, 2010, 2016, and 2020, which marked the inaugural edition under Shin Tae-yong's stewardship.
