TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Health Minister Budi Gunadi Sadikin said Indonesia will send nurses to Saudi Arabia, as the country faces a nursing staff shortage. Meanwhile, the minister said Indonesia houses quality nurses ready to provide the best services.
This was conveyed by Budi after signing a memorandum of understanding, or MoU, with Saudi Health Minister Fahad Abdulrahman Al Jalajel at the Ministry of Health office on Monday, January 24, 2025. "Now, it's just a matter of how it can be realized. And the income will be in the tens of millions," he said.
Budi said that many countries currently need more nurses. When attending the G20 meeting, he claimed that the health ministers of Germany, the Netherlands, and Japan directly requested nurses from Indonesia. "So, our medical vocational schools already have international classes," he said.
Budi explained that Indonesia has already sent nurses to Germany, with the curriculum, instructors, recruitment processes, and exams entirely from the European state to allow for immediate employment. "This guarantees the quality of supply nurses, including their language," he said.
During the MoU signing, Indonesia and Saudi Arabia agreed to exchange healthcare professionals, both doctors and nurses. Budi said Indonesia also requires more medical staff for heart surgeries.
He hoped that the cooperation could allow doctors from the King Salman Relief Center to come to Indonesia and help increase the number of operations, especially for children with congenital heart defects. "We have 12,000 cases annually, 6,000 of which are not treated and result in death. That could be assisted by the King Salman Relief Center," he said.
