TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The joint team of the Directorate of Special Criminal Acts (Dit Tipidter) of the Criminal Investigation Unit (Bareskrim) of the Indonesian National Police successfully thwarted an attempt to smuggle 151,000 lobster seeds in the waters of Pulau Numbing, Bintan, Riau Islands. "The lobsters were previously packed in Jambi on Monday, November 25, 2024, and were planned to be smuggled abroad through sea routes," said Brigadier General Nunung Syaifuddin from the Bareskrim Polri Directorate of Criminal Acts in his written statement on Tuesday, December 3, 2024.
The revelation of the lobster seed smuggling attempt is the result of cooperation with the Special Regional Office of the Directorate General of Customs and Excise (Kanwilsus DJBC) in the Riau Islands. Nunung said this operation is part of the National Police's step to cut off a cross-border lobster seed smuggling network involving Indonesia, Malaysia, and Vietnam.
This case originated from information obtained by the BBL Task Force Analyst Team of Dit Tipidter Bareskrim Polri that there would be a shipment of lobster seeds using a speedboat. Armed with that information, the joint team conducted sea patrols from the waters of Karimun to Bintan, which are often used as smuggling routes.
Then around 7:00 p.m., in the waters of Pulau Numbing, the team found a speedboat carrying 28 styrofoam boxes containing lobster seeds. When they tried to stop the boat, it attempted to flee until a collision occurred with the patrol boat.
Four crew members of the boat were successfully apprehended, although three of them suffered serious injuries due to the impact and being hit by the boat's propeller. The three suspects were immediately evacuated to RSU Tanjung Pinang for medical treatment. Meanwhile, the evidence and one other suspect were taken to the Special Regional Office of Customs and Excise in the Riau Islands.
In this operation, the team confiscated evidence in the form of 151,000 lobster seeds with an estimated state losses reaching Rp15.1 billion. The 200 HP speedboat (4 engines) used as a transport vehicle was secured along with a mobile phone.
"We will not stop cracking down on smugglers who harm the country. This operation is a manifestation of our commitment to preserving Indonesia's marine resources," said the one-star general.
