TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Embassy in Bangkok provided a detailed chronology of the powerful earthquake that affected Myanmar and Thailand on Friday, March 28, 2025. According to the Embassy, the quake occurred at 13:20 local time and registered a magnitude of 8.2. Its epicenter was located in Myanmar, approximately 326 kilometers northwest of Pang Mapha District, Mae Hong Son Province, Thailand.
Observations from the Thai Department of Meteorology indicated that the quake was felt throughout central and northern Thailand, including Bangkok, with a recorded magnitude of up to 7.7 on the Richter scale.
The Indonesian Embassy in Bangkok reported that at least six aftershocks occurred, with magnitudes ranging from 7.1 to 4.7 on the Richter scale, between 13:32 and 14:57 local time. The Thai government had not issued any prior warnings about the initial earthquake. However, they consistently provided updates on the aftershocks and advised citizens to remain vigilant.
In response, the Indonesian Embassy in Bangkok disseminated emergency hotline information through various social media platforms and WhatsApp groups for Indonesian citizens residing in Thailand. According to Embassy records as of March 15, 2025, there are 2,379 Indonesian citizens in Thailand.
The Embassy also received reports from Indonesian citizens in Bangkok and surrounding areas, confirming their safety after the earthquake. To date, there have been no reports of Indonesian citizens in Thailand being injured or killed.
The Indonesian Embassy in Bangkok also noted that the Bangkok Metropolitan Authority released the emergency hotline 1555 via its official Facebook page to receive reports of residents injured or trapped in buildings. Several public transportation systems, including the BTS and MRT, temporarily suspended operations as a precaution against aftershocks.
At 14:20, Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra declared Bangkok an emergency zone and instructed relevant authorities to issue a national warning, public notifications via SMS and media, and mobilize military resources. Airports, hospitals, and transportation services in Bangkok were also placed on high alert.
