TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed on Sunday, December 8, 2024, that stray bullets had impacted the roof of the Indonesian Embassy building in Damascus, Syria. Fortunately, no Indonesian citizens were injured in the incident.
The incident occurred amid intense fighting between rebel groups and the Syrian army. The Ministry said that the battle initially occurred in the early hours of Sunday, December 8, 2024. However, despite the intensity subsided after the reported departure of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad from Damascus, the security situation remains highly volatile.
Several large explosions, suspected to be from Israeli airstrikes, were reported across Damascus. At present, there are 19 Indonesian migrant workers at the Indonesian Embassy shelter in Damascus.
According to Syrian Immigration data, 1,162 Indonesian citizens, primarily migrant workers, are currently residing in Syria. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed that they were all safe after opposition fighters seized control of Damascus on Saturday, December 7, 2024.
The fall of Damascus to opposition forces marked a turning point in the Syrian civil war, which has been raging since 2011. The conflict escalated dramatically on November 27, with opposition groups launching a swift offensive against government forces.
Armed anti-regime groups of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad began entering Damascus from the south on Saturday, December 7, 2024. The city fell to the opposition group on Sunday, December 8, 2024, as the Syrian army lost control.
