TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian Minister of Foreign Affairs Sugiono will be the inspector of the funeral ceremony of Hasjim Djalal, a senior diplomat and maritime law expert from the Republic of Indonesia. Hasjim Djalal will be buried at the Kalibata Heroes Cemetery (TMP), Jakarta, on Monday, January 13, 2025.

Hasjim Djalal, breathed his last at the age of 90 in Jakarta on Sunday evening, January 12, 2024. On Sunday night, Minister of Foreign Affairs Sugiono visited Hasjim Djalal's residence on Jalan Taman Cilandak III, Jakarta, after the deceased's body arrived at the funeral home.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs expressed his condolences to Hasjim's family, including his second child, former Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia Dino Patti Djalal. "We express our deepest condolences and may the bereaved family be given patience and strength to face this disaster," said Sugiono while visiting the funeral home as reported by Antara.

Sugiono said that Hasjim Djalal was a figure who was an expert in international maritime law, who was also part of the negotiating team for the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea. Hasjim Djalal died on Sunday afternoon due to illness. "We from the extended family of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs feel a loss," he said.

The second son of the deceased, Dino Patti Djalal, said that his late father was scheduled to be buried at 15.00 WIB. He said the public was allowed to attend the funeral.

"I certainly thank Mr. Foreign Minister Sugiono who is present today to pay last respects to Mr. Hasjim," said Dino Patti Djalal at the funeral home, Jalan Taman Cilandak III, Jakarta, Sunday night.

He explained that his late father had been ill for a long time. However, according to him, Hasjim Djalal's figure has been able to survive this far, even after experiencing COVID-19 twice during the pandemic.

"So he is truly a fighter. Earlier I also told the Foreign Minister in the last days, even though he was mumbling, it was always about foreign policy, always about international maritime law," said Dino Patti Djalal, who was also a former Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs in the era of the 6th President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono.

Hasjim Djalal was a very tough diplomat who successfully pushed for the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), to be ratified in 1982. With this convention, the Republic of Indonesia confirmed the area of the archipelago as part of international law, which was previously opposed by other countries.

"We hope that his services to the country can be well recognized," he said.
