TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia's Minister of Foreign Affairs Sugiono on Wednesday, October 23, 2024, held a bilateral meeting with Malaysian Minister of Economy Mohd Rafizi Bin Ramli on the sidelines of the BRICS Plus 2024 Summit in Kazan, Russia. Both Ministers discussed bilateral and regional issues.

During the meeting, Sugiono emphasized the importance of strengthening bilateral cooperation between Indonesia and Malaysia, including in the fields of education and human resources development, especially through student exchange programs between educational institutions in Indonesia and Malaysia. Sugiono also reaffirmed Indonesia's full support for Malaysia's Chairmanship of ASEAN in 2025.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Indonesia stated that Rafizi expressed appreciation for Indonesia's leadership at regional and global levels, where Indonesia's influence is crucial to enhance ASEAN's role at the global level. Moreover, both Ministers exchanged views on the dynamics of the region and the world, including the expansion of BRICS membership and the political and economic impacts on the region.

The 16th BRICS Summit in Kazan, Russia, was attended by representatives from 32 countries, 24 of which were represented by heads of state, while the other eight sent high-ranking officials. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres was also reported to have received an invitation from Russia to attend the conference.

BRICS is a cooperation forum formed by Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa to discuss current global issues. In early 2024, several other countries, including the UAE, Iran, Egypt, and Ethiopia, joined, expanding the membership to nine countries. The Russian presidency invited BRICS member countries, non-BRICS member countries, and international organizations such as Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), and Eurasian Economic Commission (EEC).
