TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia's Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya claimed that post-disaster recovery in Sumatra is progressing very quickly. Teddy assessed that conditions in Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra have improved after being hit by floods and landslides at the end of last year.
According to Teddy, the recovery efforts are inseparable from the work of the government and community elements. "We are now two months post-disaster, and the data and reality on the ground truly show rapid success," Teddy said in his statement on Wednesday, February 11, 2026.
President Prabowo Subianto, Teddy said, continues to monitor the progress of post-disaster rehabilitation and reconstruction in the Sumatra region. Entering two months post-disaster, he said, the government has recorded several concrete achievements on the ground.
Teddy stated that at least 5,500 residential units were completed within two months of the disaster, with 1,500 units completed within the first month. In addition, 98 bridges have been rebuilt across all affected provinces, and 99 previously cut-off national roads are now passable.
In the health sector, Teddy stated that 87 hospitals and 867 community health centers (Puskesmas) that were previously affected have now resumed operations. Meanwhile, almost 100% of schools are back in operation, markets are operating, and economic activities are returning to normal.
Cabinet Secretary Teddy stated that the focus of recovery is not only on physical construction, but also on distributing financial assistance to local governments and providing direct assistance to affected residents. "The swift role of regional heads is also urgently needed here," Teddy said.
The National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) recorded 47,000 displaced people due to the disaster in Sumatra as of February 7, 2026. This figure is down from 1,057,482 displaced people on December 8, 2025.
Aceh, with 38,276 displaced people, accounted for the largest number. Meanwhile, there were 7,341 evacuees in North Sumatra and 1,845 in West Sumatra.
At the end of January, the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) recorded 1,201 deaths from the Sumatran ecological disaster. Of these, 562 were in Aceh, 375 in North Sumatra, and 265 in West Sumatra.
