TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Coordinating Minister for Legal, Political, and Security Affairs (Menko Kumham Imipas) Yusril Ihza Mahendra met with the Australian Minister of Home Affairs Tony Burke on Tuesday, December 3, 2024. Yusril and Burke discussed plans for cooperation in the transfer of prisoners between the two countries.

The meeting between the two ministers took place for one hour at the Office of Menko Kumham Imipas, Setiabudi, South Jakarta. After the meeting, Yusril conveyed that the bilateral meeting with Burke was part of a friendship agenda. "We discussed many things, especially the improvement of cooperation between the Indonesian government and the Australian government in the legal field," said Yusril Ihza Mahendra in a joint press conference with Burke.

Yusril revealed that one of the discussions in the meeting was the plan for repatriation or returning Australian convicts from Indonesia to the Land Down Under. Yusril mentioned that the Australian Government had submitted the request to the Indonesian Government, including the return of convicts involved in drug smuggling cases, such as the Bali Nine, to Australia.

Yusril stated that he had presented a draft plan for a prisoner repatriation agreement with Australia in the meeting with Burke. "We have submitted a draft practical agreement to the Australian Ambassador who is also present today, hopefully it can be resolved in the near future," he said.

Yusril claimed that Indonesia does not expect a prisoner exchange in this prisoner transfer agreement. According to Yusril, transfer of prisoners is different from exchange of prisoners. The Indonesian government, Yusril said, does not request a prisoner exchange for the return of the Bali Nine to Australia.

Nevertheless, Yusril mentioned that the Australian Government must consider the request for the transfer of Indonesian prisoners if Indonesia requests it at some point. Yusril urged both parties in the agreement to maintain a reciprocal attitude. "We are doing a transfer of prisoners, but with reciprocal conditions," said Yusril.

Yusril stated that the plan to transfer prisoners to their home country is a good intention and the discretion of President Prabowo Subianto. This is especially in response to the request for the transfer of convicts submitted by Australia.
