TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian national team coach Patrick Kluivert conveyed what he would do with a two-year contract from PSSI with an option to extend for two years.
"So there are two phases, the first is short-term where I come in as head coach when the Indonesian national team is in the third round of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers. So the focus is on getting points against Australia and Bahrain," he said at the Mulia Hotel, Senayan, Sunday, January 12, 2025.
The Dutch coach then said the importance of implementing and building strategies, both to qualify for the 2026 World Cup and beyond. "That must be implemented in how I train national team players, not only for the World Cup but also afterward in other events," he said.
Kluivert is aware of the pressure of the Indonesian national team situation which is currently in third place in Group C of the 2026 World Cup Qualifiers. There is also pressure from Indonesian national team supporters, that the Garuda squad qualifies for the World Cup.
"I am a person who likes to be under pressure, the more pressure the more I like it. I am not afraid of pressure. And I will apply this attitude to the team members and myself as a unit where there are several important matches ahead that we will face as a team," he said.
For him, the situation and target of the Indonesian national team to qualify for the 2026 World Cup can be realized. Kluivert emphasized the importance of smooth communication between coaches and players.
"This will not be a problem if the communication is smooth between me and the players, not only to the players but also the coaching team on the field. Later it can be executed well," said Kluivert.
Patrick will work with two assistant coaches from the Netherlands, namely Alex Pastoor and Denny Landzaat, in carrying out his duties. Shin Tae-yong's replacement coach has a big target, namely to bring the Indonesian National Team to qualify for the 2026 World Cup which will be held in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
The presence of Patrick Kluivert and the two Dutch coaches who accompanied him ended Shin Tae-yong's coaching era. Under the South Korean coach, the Indonesian national team is in third place in Group C with six points from six matches played in the third round of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers in the Asian zone.
