TEMPO.CO, Medan - Reynanda Primta Ginting, a 26-year-old staff member of the district prosecutor's office in Simalungun, was swept away in the river while chasing a corruption witness on Wednesday, July 2, 2025. The next day, the staff was found dead by a search and rescue team.

Edison Sumitro Situmorang, the Head of the Intelligence Division at the prosecutor's office, said the tragedy unfolded when they were about to summon the Village Head and Village Secretary of Banjarhulu. Both of them were inside a cafe by the riverside at the time, and the prosecutor's office intended to question them as witnesses to an alleged corruption case involving Rp300 million

"Upon seeing the officers, the village head fled by jumping into the river. The officers attempted to secure him, but one of them was swept away," said Edison on Friday, July 4, 2025.

A local resident, Muhammad Safari Siregar, 41, tried to help Reynanda, but his whereabouts remain unknown. Reynanda's body was later found entangled in wood by the riverside, 3 kilometers from the incident.

"Our deepest condolences to the victim's family," said Hery Marantika, the Head of the Class A Search and Rescue Office in Medan. Hery said search operations for Safari remain ongoing.

Adre W. Ginting, the head of the public relations division of the North Sumatra prosecutor's office, confirmed Reynanda's body. He also expressed condolences to the family and gratitude to the rescuers who assisted in the search operation.
