Iran Detains Two Following Deadly Port Explosion

4 hours ago 13

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Iranian authorities have arrested two individuals, including a government official, in connection with a fatal explosion at the Shahid Rajaee Port, the nation's primary commercial port, on Saturday, April 26. Iran's state television reported this on Sunday.

A government manager and another from the private sector have been arrested,” the state television said on Sunday, citing a report from the investigating committee, as reported by Al Arabiya.

The committee further stated that "suspects have been identified and the summoning process is underway," without elaborating further.

The explosion at the southern port terminal resulted in the deaths of at least 57 people and injured over 1,000 others. This figure is a revision of an earlier, higher death toll.

The Iranian judiciary clarified that the revision was due to the identification of previously counted separate remains as belonging to single individuals, adding that the figure remains subject to change.

Earlier, Interior Minister Eskandar Momeni attributed the explosion to "shortcomings, including noncompliance with safety precautions and negligence."

The investigative committee also announced on Monday that "false declarations (of goods) were made in some cases."

The Shahid Rajaee Port is located near the coastal city of Bandar Abbas on the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial waterway through which approximately one-fifth of global oil production transits.
