TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Iranian Red Crescent Society (IRCS) on Saturday expressed its readiness to send special rapid response teams, rescue equipment and trained personnel to the United States in response to the Los Angeles wildfires in California.
IRCS President Pirhossein Kolivand made the remarks in a message to Cliff Holtz, CEO of the American Red Cross, to convey sympathy for the victims of the Los Angeles wildfires, according to a press release published on the IRCS website.
He said the large-scale fires have destroyed homes and lives, endangered the safety of thousands of people and reduced the country's natural beauty to ashes, thus not only constituting a national crisis but also "touching the human conscience, causing pain to all those with a sense of responsibility and compassion around the world."
"I assure you, on behalf of the Iranian Red Crescent Society, that you are not alone in these difficult times," Kolivand said. Efforts to control the fires in the US require global assistance, he added.
"Leveraging our extensive experience in dealing with natural and humanitarian disasters, we, at the Iranian Red Crescent Society, are ready to immediately send our specialized rapid response teams, rescue equipment, and dedicated trained personnel to provide assistance," Kolivand said.
"We await your response to ensure necessary coordination," he added.
Described as one of the worst fires in the region's history, the fires have destroyed more than 12,300 buildings and killed at least 16 people as of Sunday, January 12, 2025.
Local authorities have warned that the actual death toll will not be known until it is safe for investigators to enter the affected areas.
