TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah will take effect starting Wednesday, November 27, 2024, after the warring parties reached an agreement mediated by the United States and France. This is a rare diplomatic victory in a region full of trauma following the Gaza war.
The Lebanese military on Wednesday, November 27, 2024, said they were ready to deploy to the south of the country. The Lebanese army was tasked with ensuring the ceasefire was implemented. Not only that, the Lebanese military was also tasked with advising residents living in border villages between Lebanon and Israel not to return home until the Israeli military was fully withdrawn. The Israel-Hezbollah war had penetrated six kilometers into Lebanese territory.
This ceasefire agreement is a major achievement for the United States as President Joe Biden's administration is counting down. President-elect Donald Trump will take office on January 20, 2024.
"Military power must be set aside to pave the way for dialogue and negotiation. A ceasefire has taken place in Lebanon, and it should also happen soon in the Gaza Strip," said French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot.
Gunshots were heard across the capital city of Beirut after the ceasefire officially took effect at 2 AM. It has not been confirmed whether the gunfire was a sign of celebration since the sound of gunfire had also served as a warning for Lebanese residents to evacuate as requested by the Israeli military.
Shortly after the ceasefire agreement was reached, cars and vans filled with mattresses, suitcases, and even furniture crossed the port in southern Lebanon, Tyre. The port had been heavily bombarded all the way to the southern tip of Lebanon. Several vehicles passing by waved the Lebanese flag, some even honked their horns.
Many villagers in Lebanon are likely to return to their hometowns, which are now in ruins due to the battles. However, some families choose to rent accommodation despite financial constraints, hoping to receive payment relief in the following month. Some refugees admitted they were still hesitant to return to their hometowns.
