TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Israel claimed on Tuesday to have killed Hashem Safieddine, the new leader of Hezbollah who replaced Hassan Nasrallah. Nasrallah was killed in an Israeli airstrike last month on an armed group in Beirut, Lebanon.
The Israeli military claimed that Safieddine was killed in an attack carried out three weeks ago in the southern outskirts of Beirut, which was the first confirmation of his death. Earlier this month, Israel said he might have been removed.
There has been no immediate response from Hezbollah to Israel's statement that they had killed Safieddine.
Israel has stepped up attacks following a year of clashes on the border with Hezbollah, which was shaken by a series of killings of its senior commanders in Israeli airstrikes. The group is an Iranian proxy force with the most potent arsenal in the Middle East and supports Palestinian fighters combatting Israel in Gaza.
As a relative of Nasrallah, Safieddine was appointed as a member of the Jihad Council - the body responsible for its military operations - and its executive council, which oversees Hizbullah's financial and administrative affairs.
Safieddine played a crucial role in representing Hezbollah during the past year of hostilities with Israel, delivering speeches at funerals and other events that Nasrallah had long been unable to attend for security reasons.
Israel's attacks have targeted southern Lebanon, the eastern Bekaa Valley, and the southern outskirts of Beirut - all Hezbollah strongholds. The group's fighters have sought to repel Israeli ground incursions.
Israel has shown no signs of relenting in its campaign in Gaza and Lebanon, even after killing several Hamas and Hezbollah leaders, including Nasrallah, its secretary-general, in an airstrike on September 27.
Diplomats said Israel aims to secure a strong position before the new U.S. administration takes over after the November 5 election between Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump.
