TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Israel closed Ibrahimi Mosque in the city of Hebron, the West Bank occupied territory, Palestine for Muslim worshippers on Sunday. This is to allow illegal Israeli settlers to celebrate the Jewish holiday of Sukkot.
"The site will remain closed until Tuesday," Ghassan al-Rajabi, the Director General of Palestinian Waqf in Hebron, told Anadolu.
He referred to the closure of the mosque as part of the "temporal and spatial division" of the site by Israel.
Rajabi stated that the illegal Israeli settlers permanently occupy more than two-thirds of the mosque complex to conduct their religious rituals.
"This is an effort to impose a new reality that allows settlers to stay there permanently while revoking the religious rights of Muslims," he added.
The Ibrahimi Mosque is located in the old city of Hebron in the southern West Bank, under Israeli control. Around 400 illegal settlers reside there, guarded by about 1,500 Israeli soldiers.
Considered a holy site by Muslims and Jews, the Ibrahimi Mosque complex in Hebron is believed to be the burial place of Prophet Ibrahim, Ishak, and Yakub.
After the massacre of 29 Palestinian worshippers inside the mosque in 1994 by Jewish extremist settler, Baruch Goldstein, the Israeli government divided the mosque complex between Muslim and Jewish worshippers.
