TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Israeli forces detained more than 240 Palestinians, including dozens of medical workers and hospital directors, in northern Gaza on Friday, according to the health ministry in the enclave and the Israeli military.
As reported by Chanel NewsAsia, the Gaza health ministry said it was concerned about the health of Hussam Abu Safiya, the director of Kamal Adwan Hospital. Several medical workers released by the Israeli military on Friday night said Israeli soldiers had beaten him.
The Israeli military claimed the hospital was used as a command center for Hamas military operations and that those arrested were suspected fighters. It said Abu Safiya was taken for questioning because he was suspected of being a Hamas agent.
Attacks on hospitals in conflict areas are a violation of international humanitarian law.
On Friday, Hamas rejected Israeli claims that its fighters had operated from the hospital during the 15-month Gaza war, saying no fighters were in the hospital. The group has not commented on the arrests of the 240 people.
The raid on the hospital, one of three medical facilities on the northern edge of Gaza, left the last major health facility in northern Gaza unable to operate, the World Health Organization (WHO) said in a post on X.
“WHO is appalled by yesterday’s attack. The systematic destruction of the health system and the siege of northern Gaza for more than 80 days endanger the lives of the 75,000 Palestinians remaining in the territory,” the WHO said.
Some patients were evacuated from Kamal Adwan to the Indonesian Hospital, which is not functioning, and medical staff were prevented from joining them there, the Gaza Health Ministry said. Other patients and staff were taken to other medical facilities.
The Israeli military said 350 patients and medical personnel were evacuated before the Kamal Adwan operation, while 95 others were evacuated to the Indonesian Hospital during the operation, in coordination with local health authorities.
Separately, the Gaza Health Ministry said Israeli strikes on the enclave killed 18 Palestinians on Saturday, at least nine of them in a house in the Maghazi camp in the central Gaza Strip.
The Israeli military has not commented on the attack and the casualties.
TARGETS IN NORTHERN GAZA
In recent months, Israeli forces have displaced Palestinians and destroyed large areas around the towns of Jabalia, Beit Hanoun and Beit Lahiya in northern Gaza.
Palestinians accuse Israel of ethnic cleansing by depopulating the area to create a buffer zone. Israel denies this, saying it aims to prevent Hamas fighters from regrouping in the area.
The Israeli military said on Saturday that it had launched overnight operations against targets in the Beit Hanoun area, adding that “forces are allowing civilians remaining in the area to evacuate for their own safety”.
The military also issued a new evacuation order to Beit Hanoun residents, ordering them to leave and head for the southern Gaza Strip, citing rockets fired from the area.
In a statement, it said two rockets fired from northern Gaza towards Jerusalem and other Israeli areas were intercepted.
Israel’s genocide in Gaza has killed more than 45,400 Palestinians, according to health officials in the territory, the majority of them women and children. Most of the 2.3 million residents have been displaced and much of Gaza has been destroyed.
The war was sparked by a Hamas attack on southern Israel on Oct. 7, 2023, which killed 1,139 people and took 251 hostages in Gaza, according to Israeli figures.
