TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Israeli Prison Authority will begin transferring Palestinian prisoners to two prison facilities, where they will be released on Sunday, January 19, 2025, after a ceasefire in Gaza comes into effect.
According to Israel's Army Radio, as quoted by Anadolu, the Palestinian prisoners will be transferred in a heavily guarded convoy on Saturday night to the designated prison facilities before being released.
Although the radio station did not provide additional information, Israeli news site Walla reported that the Prison Authority has completed logistical preparations for the transfer of the prisoners.
Unlike the previous prisoner exchange deal in November 2023, the media report noted that this time the Palestinian prisoners will be transported on Prison Service buses with tinted windows, rather than International Red Cross buses, to avoid public celebrations.
The report also explained that the release of the Palestinian prisoners is contingent on the Red Cross confirming the handover of the Israeli prisoners.
According to the news site's report, the Palestinian prisoners will be transferred to two prison facilities, namely Shikma Prison in Ashkelon (southern Israel) and Ofer Prison near the city of Beitunia, west of Ramallah in the central West Bank.
Qatar announced a three-phase ceasefire deal Wednesday night to end more than 15 months of deadly Israeli attacks on the Gaza Strip.
The ceasefire is scheduled to go into effect at 8:30 a.m. local time on Sunday.
Nearly 47,000 Palestinians have been killed — mostly women and children — and more than 110,700 others injured in Israel’s genocidal war on Gaza since Oct. 7, 2023, according to local health authorities.
The International Criminal Court (ICC) issued arrest warrants in November 2024 for Israeli leader Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza.
Israel also faces a genocide lawsuit at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) over its war in the region.
