TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia's Minister of Communication and Digital, Meutya Hafid, invited the private sector to continue collaborating to enhance digital talent and ecosystem in Indonesia. "We look forward to continued collaboration in developing digital talent and Indonesian ecosystem," said Meutya Hafid in a press release received by Tempo on February 22, 2025.

Previously, Meutya Hafid appreciated Amazon Web Services (AWS) for their collaboration in launching its first data center investment in 2021. "With the acceleration of digital transformation in Indonesia, a strong collaboration between the government and technology partners such as AWS is crucial to create a workforce ready to face the future," said Meutya.

Meutya added that the collaboration between AWS and the Ministry of Communication and Digital played a crucial role in advancing education, skill development, and sustainability initiatives. This equips the Indonesian society with the digital competencies needed to thrive in the digital economy era. "Programs such as Skillful in the Cloud and Think Big Space directly support our national agenda to strengthen digital literacy, prepare the Indonesian workforce, and drive sustainable digital growth," said Meutya.

Amazon Web Services (AWS) Indonesia has invested over $5 billion in the cloud data center. This is their step towards developing digital skills, sustainability, and community welfare, creating a ripple effect for the local economy.

Since the launch of the AWS Region in Jakarta in 2021, AWS has introduced various community programs focusing on Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM) education, local skill development, sustainability, and hyperlocal programs that impact the surrounding community.

Recently, AWS partnered with Prestasi Junior Indonesia (PJI) to launch the STEAM Capacity Building: Exploring AI & ML program, providing basic artificial intelligence (AI) training directly to 40 teachers from 40 schools in West Java. Through a structured curriculum from PJI and Code.org's App Labs, the teachers will experiment and create their own AI and machine learning (ML) projects. After the training, these teachers will integrate AI and ML into their curriculum, reaching over 2,400 students with innovative technology education.

Driving Innovation Through STEAM-Based Education

Education is the foundation of progress. AWS's flagship program, Think Big Space, launched in October 2024, marks a historic milestone as the first STEAM learning center in the ASEAN region. President Director of PT Amazon Data Services Indonesia, Winu Adiarto, stated that training at AWS implementing Think Big Space serves as a STEAM learning center providing technical learning and cloud computing training for students and teachers. "This facility is expected to benefit around 4,000 students and the community annually, with free access to AWS SkillBuilder and various other educational programs," he said.

The annual Girls' Tech Day program continues to bridge the gender gap in the technology field. In 2024, AWS welcomed over 300 female students from six schools in West Java, inspiring the future generation of female innovators to explore careers in technology. The event featured female leaders in the technology field and interactive coding tournaments, igniting enthusiasm among the participants. To date, over 900 female students in West Java have participated in this program.

Bridging Skills Gap Through Local Development Programs

Recognizing the importance of digital skills in today's job market, AWS has created various skills training programs, including collaborations with the Indonesian government and non-profit organizations. Since 2017, AWS has trained over 800 thousand individuals in Indonesia in cloud computing skills.

Skillful in the Cloud (TdA) is a strategic cloud training program from AWS aimed at students, educators, and underserved communities in 26 provinces in Indonesia. Last year, this program expanded to the communities of West Java with Introduction to Cloud Computing and Web Static Development training, reaching over 11,000 students, as well as Cloud Practitioner Essentials for over 200 teachers.

Winu also said their team collaborated with Alkademi and Jabar Digital Service to launch the Jabar Digital Academy (JDA) in 2024. JDA offers two main tracks, Full Stack Programming and Digital Marketing. In 2025, JDA will continue to expand by adding Generative AI learning for programming and digital marketing to empower more individuals in West Java.

Together with Orbit Future Academy, AWS also launched the Digital Upskilling & Job Readiness Program in 2024, with 1,500 students from 13 universities in West Java who have participated in this program. This program uses a unique five-star progression system to develop digital skills and prepare participants for the workforce.

Promoting Sustainability and Environmental Care

Water issues are also a concern. In 2024, AWS expanded their collaboration with Habitat for Humanity in West Java to improve access to clean water through providing household connections and clean water facilities in four villages. To date, AWS has built nine clean water facilities and installed hundreds of water connections, benefiting 1,394 households. Through the AWS Water Positive project, AWS aims to restore around 200 million liters of water per year to the community.

Together with the Greeneration Foundation, the Eco Ranger 2.0 program has successfully planted over 3,500 mangrove seedlings and built two organic waste management facilities in Pantai Mekar Village. This program also involves thousands of community members through online training and direct community activities like waste collection, environmental cleanup, and mangrove planting.

Driving Long-term Local Social Impact

Winu stated that their team believes understanding the needs of the local community is key to creating long-term impact. Winu said their team continues to invest in the Indonesian community, using technology as a force for good. "By focusing on education, skill development, environmental sustainability, and hyperlocal programs, AWS is not only helping Indonesia prepare for the digital future - but is also shaping that future to benefit all," said Winu.
