TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Israel is suspected of committing another war crime after setting fire to the Indonesian Hospital in Northern Gaza on Monday, October 21, 2024. The Indonesian Hospital is one of the only three partially functional hospitals in Northern Gaza. Not only that, witnesses reported that the army also burnt down buildings where thousands of people were taking shelter.
Before the hospital was set on fire, Israeli forces had already besieged the area by escalating military operations. The hospital in Beit Lahia, north of Jabalia, was “directly targeted," which caused disrupted electricity and caused patients to die after being disconnected from oxygen devices.
"Even the option of prioritising the wounded is no longer available, as many of the injured were left to bleed to death yesterday due to the number of casualties,” the ministry of health said.
As reported by The National, one survivor named Yousri Qarmout, 37, said that Israeli forces have not stopped using burning and destruction tactics almost every day, especially in areas designated as protection zones for the wounded victims.
“Yesterday, the Israeli army set fire to many buildings around the Indonesian Hospital, a well-known area with many shelters. The fires haven't stopped, and the smoke reached most parts of northern Gaza, while the sounds of explosions continue without a break," said Yousri Qarmout.
No Access to Aid
As many as 200,000 people have been trapped in the Jabalia refugee camp in northern Gaza for 17 days, with only three out of ten hospitals partially functional in the area. After Israeli forces burned the Indonesian Hospital, northern Gaza is now down to two hospitals to help treat wounded Palestinians.
Despite the increasingly dire conditions, the U.N. refugee agency in the enclave, UNRWA, stated that Israel is currently not allowing any humanitarian missions to enter the northern Gaza area.
"People attempting to flee are getting killed, their bodies left on the street," said UNRWA head Philippe Lazzarini.
The Israeli military also ordered the health authorities in Gaza to evacuate three hospitals in northern Gaza or leave the patients without medical care but this was unheeded by the medical personnel in Gaza. They continue to provide treatment for people in the north with limited medical equipment.
"The army is burning the schools next to the hospital, and no one can enter or leave the hospital," said one nurse at the Indonesian Hospital, who asked not to be named.
Palestinian health officials said at least 18 people had been killed in Jabalia and eight elsewhere in Gaza in Israeli strikes.
As a result of these events, UNRWA urged the Israeli authorities to allow access to Northern Gaza for rescue missions or for the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) to contact the Israeli authorities "to allow access in order to carry out lifesaving rescue operations in (northern) Gaza, including the recovery of people trapped under rubble."
