TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Israeli government has approved a bill allowing the military to call up 400,000 additional reserve soldiers amidst the postponement of negotiations for the second stage ceasefire in Gaza and a prisoner exchange agreement. As reported by Anadolu Agency, Israel said the decision was made amid concerns of a resurgence of conflict in the Gaza Strip.
According to the new decision, the Israeli army will mobilize up to 400,000 reserve soldiers by May 29, 2025. This number is an increase from the current 80,000 troops, with a maximum of 320,000 reserve soldiers.
"This decision comes amid ongoing challenges in recruiting human resources for reserve duty," Israel's Channel 14 media said.
The first phase of a six-week ceasefire agreement, which came into effect on January 19, officially ended at midnight on Saturday. However, Israel has not agreed to proceed to the second stage ceasefire that would end the war in Gaza.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has sought to extend the first phase ceasefire to allow as many hostage exchanges as possible with Palestinian prisoners, without any concessions. According to his proposal, Israel also would not have to fulfill additional military and humanitarian obligations.
The Palestinian resistance group Hamas has refused to continue the agreement under these conditions. Hamas insists on Israel adhering to the original ceasefire terms and immediately commencing negotiations for the second stage. Hamas demands the full withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza and a complete cessation of hostilities.
The ceasefire agreement has halted Israel's war in Gaza, which has claimed over 48,380 lives, mostly women and children, and left the enclave in ruins. Israel also faces charges of genocide at the International Criminal Court for its actions in the enclave.
