TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - An Israeli airstrike on Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis, southern Gaza, resulted in the deaths of at least 19 Palestinians, including four journalists and a firefighter. Health authorities and eyewitnesses confirmed the casualties, with several others sustaining injuries in the attack.
According to a reporter from Anadolu, the Israeli military shelled the top floor of the emergency building, known as the "Al-Yassin" floor. Medical sources told Al Jazeera that the death toll at the Nasser Medical Complex had subsequently risen to 19 people.
The Gaza Health Ministry had previously reported that eight people were killed and several others wounded in the initial attack.
The ministry added that Israeli forces targeted the fourth floor of one of the complex's buildings with two airstrikes. The second strike occurred as rescue teams arrived to evacuate the wounded and retrieve the dead.
Among those killed were prominent journalists: Mohammad Salama from Al Jazeera, Hussam al-Masri from the Reuters bureau, who also worked as a Palestinian television cameraman, Moaz Abu Taha from the NBC network, and Mariam Abu Daqqa, a freelance journalist working for The Associated Press.
Hatem Khaled, a photojournalist for Reuters who had extensively documented the wars in Gaza, was among those injured.
The Gaza Government Media Office stated that at least 244 journalists and media workers have been killed in Israeli attacks on Gaza since October 2023.
The Palestinian Civil Defense also reported that a fire brigade driver was killed in the attack and seven of his team members were injured while attempting to rescue victims and evacuate bodies.
Israel's ongoing genocide in Gaza has resulted in the deaths of nearly 62,700 Palestinians since October 2023. The military actions have devastated the enclave, which is now facing widespread famine.
The International Criminal Court (ICC) issued arrest warrants last November for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant on charges of war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza.
Furthermore, Israel is currently facing a genocide case at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) for its conduct in the conflict.
