TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung inaugurated the Batu Licin Reservoir in Cilangkap, Cipayung Sub-district, East Jakarta, on Monday, January 12, 2026. The reservoir is said to improve water resource management, helping to control flooding and reduce the risk of inundation, particularly in East Jakarta and the surrounding areas.

"Since the beginning of my term, flood issues have been one of my main concerns. Therefore, the reservoir construction was carried out seriously and planned," said Pramono during the inauguration on Monday, January 12, 2026.

The reservoir, formerly known as Giri Kencana Reservoir, officially changed its name to Batu Licin Reservoir, considering the history of the area. The reservoir stands on a land area of approximately 4.5 hectares, with a water storage area of 2.7 hectares, a storage capacity of around 92,000 cubic meters, and a depth of six meters.

Based on the testimonies of the residents, Pramono mentioned that the Cilangkap area used to be frequently inundated every time heavy rain occurred. The potential for flooding in the area has been noticeably reduced as Batu Licin Reservoir comes into operation.

Aside from functioning as flood control infrastructure, the reservoir is developed as a public space. The Jakarta government provides various facilities, including a jogging track, a basketball court, a mosque, and recreational areas for the residents.

"The presence of this reservoir has a positive impact on the community, not only technically, but also as a comfortable public space," said Pramono.

The reservoir, according to Pramono, is part of the medium-term flood control strategy that is in line with the normalization program of the Ciliwung River, Sunter River, and Krukut River. With the support of pumping systems, rainfall monitoring, and potential tidal wave monitoring, inundation can now be handled within one to one and a half hours, he claimed.

Pramono added that before the reservoir was built, the area did not have adequate water catchment and storage areas. The presence of Batu Licin Reservoir is expected to strengthen the flood control system as a new water catchment area.

Currently, five reservoirs in East Jakarta have been completed, followed by two reservoirs in South Jakarta and two reservoirs in West Jakarta. Overall, these reservoirs are intended to increase water storage capacity and bolster Jakarta's resilience against flooding.

Pramono also opened up the opportunity to use the reservoir as a public space, including for fishing. "Please make use of it, including for fishing, and I request that it be free of charge," he said, while urging the public to maintain the facilities in an organized and sustainable manner.
